The parliamentary group of Hungary's ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition held a two-day season-opening meeting in Esztergom, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced a new economic programme. According to the PM, the world economy is undergoing a significant transformation, and Hungary must adapt its economic policy to this, Magyar Nemzet reported on Sunday.

In his speech, the Prime Minister stressed that the centre of gravity of the world economy is shifting eastwards.

In ten years at the most, all the top performers in the world economy will be in the East

Orbán said.

In his opinion, Hungary should strive for economic neutrality and reject anything that could harm the country. The PM set out specific goals:

We need a level of growth above the European Union average!

This is to be achieved through a policy of economic neutrality, which he has emphasised a number of times over the past few weeks, and which, in his view, would allow a GDP growth rate of between 3 and 6%. As part of the new economic policy, Orbán announced a number of measures, but nothing we have not heard recently.

These include a multi-year wage increase programme based on economic growth, with the aim of reaching a minimum wage of 1,000 euros and an average wage of HUF 1 million (cc. EUR 2,500).

There are also plans to double the size of exportable small and medium-sized enterprises, which will require a new economic plan and capital injection.

Orbán also announced the introduction of a Workers' Credit from 2025, which would provide working young people with a zero-interest loan similar to the student loan.

He also stressed the importance of

affordable housing and set a target of doubling the number of housing starts and reducing interest rates on housing loans to below 5%.

In his speech, Orbán also addressed the current political situation. He criticised the leadership of the European Union and warned that Brussels will continue to exert pressure on Hungary on a number of issues.
