South Korean company to set up a plant in Maglód

In Maglód, near the main road 31, a 1.8 hectare strip of forest was completely cleared. The disappearance of the trees occurred in the immediate vicinity of residential houses and, according to locals, took place over a period of two weeks. Locals have been told that a South Korean aluminium producer may build a new plant there, RTL News reports.

Ildikó Papp, the independent municipal representative, said, "We have little information about what kind of investment is planned in the area." All they know is that

a South Korean company is planning to build a two-by-six thousand m² industrial park where an aluminium producer will manufacture components. There are also plans to build accommodation for 300 people.

Some residents are concerned about health risks, others fear that the city will become uninhabitable. Some told the news that the municipality is not communicating adequately with residents.

In addition to the industrial park, a link to the M0 motorway in Nagykáta is also planned, which could lead to an additional increase in traffic on the 31 main road.

According to the Ministry of Construction and Transport, this is to be offset by a half-kilometre tunnel under the town.

RTL also contacted the Maglód Municipality on the matter. The new mayor, who took office in October, declined to comment, saying only that the decision to sell the land was taken in 2004 by his predecessor, who led the town for 22 years. Details of the investment are currently classified as a business secret.

The current independent mayor has shown openness to consultation with residents: a public forum on the factory construction will be held in mid-November.
