New bridges to be built between Hungary and Slovakia
At a joint press conference with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Hungarian Prime Minister emphasised that they had agreed on the need for continued development of bilateral cooperation in the future.
Previous agreements have increased the number of border crossings between the two countries from 22 to 40 along the 654-kilometre border, but
now we need new roads, bridges and railways,
said Viktor Orbán.
Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó added that Hungary and Slovakia are opening the second chapter of their agreement to increase the number of border crossings, which
includes the planning of three new bridges and four new roads.
According to his briefing, the parties will start planning three new bridges:
- a lorry bridge at Esztergom,
- a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians at Dunakiliti and
- a bridge over the Tisza at Ágcsernyő.
Péter Szijjártó also mentioned that they will start planning four new roads:
- the northern extension of the M2 motorway, and
- three smaller roads in Ipolyvece, Zabar and Vámosmikola.
- In addition, several old crossings will be renovated, including the bridge at Vámosszabadi near Győr.
"Equally importantly, we will be launching new services on several railway lines to make it easier to cross the border with more trains between Győr and Bratislava, between Štúrovo and Szob, and in the Balassagyarmat and Salgótarján region," he added.
