Slovakia extends border controls due to foot-and-mouth disease
The Slovak government initially introduced temporary border controls on 7 April, which were due to expire on 8 May. The move extends these controls until 7 June, according to the Slovak public news agency TASR.
The Ministry of the Interior, which proposed the extension, cited the continuing risk of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
During the period of temporary border controls, Slovakia's Ministry of the Interior will continue to take decisions on border crossings where vehicle traffic may be temporarily suspended. The aim is to restrict such traffic to border crossings where disinfection procedures can be carried out.
These measures will not affect the so-called "green border", i.e. tourist traffic on foot and by bicycle outside official border crossings.
