Hungarian buyers seek second-hand cars around HUF 2 million - here are the most popular brands

In Hungary, most used cars change hands in the HUF 1-3 million price range, and this is where most people search when looking to buy. Használtautó.hu has compiled a list of the 10 most popular models in this category.

In 2024, more than 107,000 people showed interest in advertisements within the HUF 1-3 million price range. The average price of all listings in this category was HUF 1,949,000, with the advertised models having an average age of 15.3 years. Based on the number of inquiries,

the top three positions are held by the Volkswagen Golf, Opel Astra, and Ford Focus.

Among the 10 most popular cars, the Suzuki Swift is the most affordable with an average price of HUF 1,692,000, while the Audi A4 is the most expensive, averaging HUF 2,030,000.

"There hasn't been a major reorganisation in the HUF 1-3 million price range: the Golf-Astra-Focus trio continues to dominate demand. What's more noteworthy is the age of the available vehicles:

in this category, the average age of cars is 15.3 years, which clearly shows what compromises need to be made in this price range,

said Márk Koralewsky, Head of Business at Használtautó.hu.

Based on the data from approximately 107,000 interested buyers, it's clear that the price point around HUF 2 million is the most sought-after. This amount now typically buys 15-year-old, compact-sized, lower-middle category models with high mileage.

Last year, a total of 232,572 cars were registered, of which 107 389 were used (46.2%) and 125 183 new (53.8%).

Between 2007 and 2024, the number of passenger cars registered in the country increased by 1.25 million to over 4.26 million. However, the average age of the Hungarian passenger car fleet rose from 10.3 years to 16.2 years in the same period.

The average age was the highest (39.2 years) for Zastava, while there were only a few hundreds of them (520) in circulation. The second oldest brand was Wartburg (38 years), with a lot more of them (3,203) on the roads, followed by Polski Fiat (37.7 years and 2,209 cars).

The ranking of Top10 of the oldest passenger car makes in Hungary is lead by Daewoo with more than 38,500 on the roads, followed by Lada (over 16,000) and Trabant (7,800).
