Hungarian gov't provides significant funding for HUN-REN salary increases
The historic decision follows a resolution made by the Governing Board of the Hungarian Research Network on 20 June 2025, which determined the necessity of salary adjustments. Subsequently, HUN-REN's leadership promptly approached the Hungarian government requesting the necessary funding, which was almost immediately granted.
According to the government decree published yesterday in the Hungarian Official Gazette,
HUF 18 billion in immediate support is available for the salary development of the research network's staff.
The leadership of HUN-REN emphasised that they will do everything to ensure the funds reach the institutions as quickly as possible, making the salary increase noticeable for researchers and staff members.
The Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN) was established by a parliamentary decision and operates as an independent budgetary organisation. HUN-REN encompasses 11 research centres, 8 research institutes, and 116 supported research groups, conducting both basic and applied research across all scientific fields, including mathematics and natural sciences, humanities, and life sciences.
