Hungarian government introduces new measures against shrinkflation
According to a government decree, retailers must display clearly visible information notices for two months when a product is introduced to the market in a new, smaller package (by weight or volume). The format and content of these notices are specified by the minister responsible for trade.
In the case of products manufactured in Hungary, the manufacturer must inform the retailer in writing about any reduction in packaging size or potential discontinuation of previous package sizes when the product is first sold. In all other cases, this responsibility lies with the first Hungarian distributor or wholesaler.
The same notification must be sent to the NKFH at the same time.
The packaging reduction database is accessible on the NKFH website. As emphasised, it supports transparency, informed consumer decision-making and monitoring of commercial practices.
