Hungarian pharma company invests HUF 14.5 billion to expand its Vas county plant
The more than 110-year-old company's expansion project in Körmend will create new jobs, contributing to Egis's workforce growth. The company currently employs 3,800 people in Hungary and is approaching a milestone of over 4,000 employees.
International demand for Egis products continues to grow steadily.
The company invested HUF 20 billion in research and development last year and currently manufactures more than 650 different pharmaceutical products in Hungary.
This investment also indicates that we intend to continue to attach strategic importance to our site in Körmend, which is the largest employer in the city,
said Csaba Poroszlai, CEO of Egis Gyógyszergyár Zrt., who emphasized that their goal is for the company to use the best available technologies and tools.
Since 2018, the Körmend factory has received approximately HUF 29 billion in state subsidies for development.
Among other things, the company manufactures tablets, film-coated tablets, capsules, syrups, solutions, creams, and ointments in Körmend, with more than 60% of its total pharmaceutical production coming from that plant.
Minister Szijjártó highlighted the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasising the unprecedented importance of healthcare preparedness and prevention. He stressed that the pharmaceutical industry plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges, and the government will continue to support the sector to maintain its world-class position.
Hungary currently ranks as the 19th largest pharmaceutical exporter globally, despite being only 95th in terms of population.
Over the past decade, this marks the 34th major pharmaceutical investment supported by the government. The total government support of HUF 36 billion has generated HUF 240 billion in pharmaceutical investments in Hungary, creating thousands of new jobs.
