János Lázár works on Hungary's most expensive motorway
According to the Ministry of Construction and Transport, preliminary discussions are underway regarding the implementation and possible financing methods of the M100 expressway, which will connect the M1 motorway with Esztergom. Minister János Lázár indicated that private capital would also be involved in the investment. The public procurement procedure is planned to be announced in 2026, with construction expected to begin at the end of that year.
While the construction of the M1-M100 junction is MKIF's concession task, the M100 road itself is not part of the current concession agreement.
The M100 construction was previously announced:
the 32-kilometre section was planned to be completed in two phases at a cost of HUF 335 billion, but the government postponed it in 2022 due to an investment freeze.
According to the current plans, the tender will be divided into three sections that can be won either individually or collectively. The estimated cost is HUF 500 billion, given that the road includes several viaducts and tunnels and passes through the Buda Mountains.
The minister had previously suggested that private capital could be involved in other expressways, such as the M86 (Körmend–Szombathely) and M87 (Szombathely–Kőszeg) sections. Progress was made on the M100 project earlier this year when Duna Aszfalt responded to the market consultation.
Although there was strong public protest against the originally planned route, which was designed to pass close to residential areas, local residents consider the investment justified due to significant truck traffic in the area.
