Egis opens new pharmaceutical plant in Budapest

Egis Pharmaceutical Ltd. has inaugurated one of the largest active ingredient manufacturing investments in its 112-year history in Budapest. The new plant, valued at HUF 30 billion (EUR 77.5 million) and financed from the company's own resources, will produce the active ingredient for a globally leading medication, featuring numerous technological innovations, the company announced.

While the reduction of active ingredient manufacturing has been a general trend in the European pharmaceutical industry in recent decades, Egis has renewed its activities in this direction in several stages over the past 12 years.

The special feature of this HUF 30 billion brownfield investment in Kőbánya is that its "twin plant" in Normandy was recently inaugurated as well.

The two technologically identical facilities produce the active ingredient for a medication recommended for venous diseases by the France-based pharmaceutical company Servier Group, with the two plants together ensuring the necessary manufacturing capacity.

Thanks to these plants, the production volume of the active ingredient in question will double, allowing the company to meet the demand driven by growing patient needs more efficiently and with a smaller environmental footprint.

During the four-year project, a modern manufacturing plant with multiple technological levels was built.

The company also announced this summer that it is further modernising its Körmend site with developments worth more than HUF 14 billion (EUR 36.2 million),

where job-creating investments worth nearly HUF 29 billion (EUR 74.9 million) have been implemented with state support since 2018.
