One fifth of Hungary's power production came from renewables
The paper noted that while solar and wind power generation tends to spike for shorter or longer periods as it did on Sunday, it is also common that both technologies take a breather at night when the sun is not up and there's no wind either.
Annual statistics paint a more accurate picture of power generation by renewable sources. Data by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (HEA) show that in 2018, 11.7% of Hungary's gross electricity production stemmed from renewables, within which 16.2% was provided by wind energy and 16.5% by PV stations. According to these numbers, wind farms contributed less than 1.9% and solar plants 1.93% of the country's gross electricity production.
While Hungary's wind farm capacities have not changed for years, several smaller and some larger solar plants were delivered last year. The office announced in October 2019 that over 1.1 gigawatt of PV capacity had been added to the national grid by the end of July, versus 726,000 megawatts hooked up in the whole of 2018. It added that it had approved another 1.4 GW worth of capacities to be subsidised and most of these could be set up within a few years.
