Hungarians do indeed buy more government securities
According to the statement, the savings of the population in government securities held by the Hungarian State Treasury increased by 38% this year, reaching HUF 5,700 billion by July.
Of these customers, 480,000 have a normal securities account and another 320,000 are children with a Start account.
The communication points out that only the Hungarian State Treasury can open an online securities account or a Start account with baby bonds through a client portal. Customers can apply for the WebTreasury, MobileTreasury or TeleTreasury service for their securities account at the Hungarian State Treasury at any time, and 70% of transactions are already carried out here, the statement said.
Since June this year, the Hungarian government introduced a number of measures aimed at encouraging the public to invest their savings in government securities, including a 13% social contribution tax on most of the savings types that are not government securities, and obliging banks to inform their customers how much they could have saved if they put their savings in government securities, and how much they have lost by investing in bonds, by letter.
