Hungary wins HUF 19 bn CEF grant for Budapest-Vienna rail link
The recently closed CEF funding round awarded EUR 2.1 bn to 130 projects.
The biggest Hungarian winner was the development of the Budapest-Vienna railway link through system upgrades between Budapest Kelenföld station and the border crossing at Hegyeshalom, including safety equipment and traffic control systems.
As a result of the upgrades, travel time between Budapest and the Austrian border will decrease by 15 minutes, allowing state railways MÁV to run more trains to Vienna and Western Eurpe.
Other Hungarian winners of the latest round of CEF grants include two truck parking facilities along the M5 motorway with 302 spaces combined, the next phase of the SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) installation programme with the involvement of national air traffic controller HungaroControl, and the German-Hungarian joint development of on-board ECTS Baseline 3 train control systems for Siemens trains that regularly visit Hungary.
“Hungary has won CEF grants worth HUF 362 bn for 57 separate transport development projects in the current EU budget period,” state secretary in charge of transport policy László Mosóczi said. The projects, with a total value of HUF 670 bn, include widening the M15 and M70 expressways to four lanes and the construction of a Danube bridge at Komárom, as well as the upgrading of several domestic rail links, he added.
