Home Start momentum does not slacken in Hungary, according to K&H's numbers

Although the volume has stabilised somewhat compared to the extremely high number of loan applications in the first few weeks of the Home Start Programme, K&H's experience shows that interest in the preferential loan scheme remains high nationwide. MBH, Erste and CIB previously reported interesting results in their surveys, too.

Prospective buyers who had been on the sidelines in recent years have now returned to the market. According to the bank, current activity levels still significantly exceed those typical of similar periods in previous years.

According to data received by K&H,

  • the average loan amount taken out by applicants is HUF 35 million,
  • with an average own contribution of 25%.
  • While the capital and county seats account for more than half of the total demand, activity in rural areas is also growing steadily, with above-average demand being observed in many places.
  • Budapest accounts for nearly 27% of the total contract portfolio and remains the most active area.
  • Condominiums remain much more popular than single-family homes.
  • First-time buyers typically prefer smaller, more compact properties.
  • Bács-Kiskun and Pest counties follow the capital, each accounting for more than 9% of sales, indicating a strong rural presence. Hajdú-Bihar county follows with around 6%, and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county with almost 5.7%.

Gergő Molnár, Head of Retail Marketing at K&H, emphasised that demand is also strong in rural areas, demonstrating that the programme truly meets national needs.

Based on current trends, K&H expects the programme's popularity to remain stable in the coming months.
