Fuel prices in Hungary were raised as a result of an excise tax hike in two stages, by HUF 20 on 1 January and by HUF 21 on 15 January.

The wholesale gross list price of petrol will be raised by HUF 5 per litre and the price of diesel will increase by HUF 6 per litre as of Friday (26 Jan). Accordingly, we should find the following average retail prices at the pumps two days from now:

  • 95-octane petrol: HUF 590/litre
  • diesel: HUF 625/litre

A week ago, Hungarian petrol prices were already the third highest and diesel prices the second highest on average in Central and Eastern Europe. The government's explicit goal was to keep domestic motor fuel prices under the neighbouring countries' level. Depending on price developments in the region, Hungary may be positioned differently in the upcoming rankings.
